I am a Baking with Julia dropout. I couldn’t keep up. Now Dorie Greenspan has a new cookbook, Baking Chez Moi! The theme of the book is French home baking and Tuesdays with Dorie is going to start baking their way through the book. I am going to take up the challenge and join in the fun hoping to keep up with the group this time.
What better way to kick off my start on this new challenge than to meet Dorie and have her sign my book. In looking over her book tour I realized that I wasn’t going to be able to attend any of her stops in Southern California as I was getting ready to leave for a business trip to Chicago, BUT WAIT, Dorie was going to be in Chicago when I was and only a mile from my hotel!
The first recipe for the challenge is Palets de Dames, Lille Style. This recipe is posted on the book’s Amazon page as a sample recipe. Palets de Dames are beautiful little white cookies with a white icing. I mixed the dough in the evening, refrigerated it overnight. Then shaped and baked the cookies in the morning. The instructions for icing the cookies were easy to follow and they turned out beautiful. I do have just a couple of comments about the icing. The recipe calls for “a few drops of lemon juice”. I used too few drops and you really couldn’t even taste the lemon at all. I was too concerned about getting the icing too thin, as I added a bit more milk it was easier to achieve a nice smooth surface on the cookie. These cakey little cookies are perfect with a cup of coffee or tea.

It’s so fun seeing how many of us have met Dorie during her book tour. I was able to go to one of her events in Vancouver, myself. Looking forward to baking along with everyone. (And I’m a Baking with Julia dropout, too.)

School is always in session at TWD – even after a little bit of absenteeism 🙂
It is really cool to see how many people made it to her signings – I am taking a 200 mile trek on Saturday to catch a signing. Not to be missed!

Your cookies look perfect. I used only lemon juice in the glaze so they had a nice lemony kick. I’m new to TWD and hoping to keep up with the others as well!

How lucky for you to meet Dorie, she is so lovely. Tricia and I met her in Seattle last year
at the IFBC and it was great. It will be fun baking with you on this new book, even though
we are still doing French Fridays. Hopefully we will last.
That’s a lot of work to keep up with both French Fridays and BCM. I love the baking, it’s just getting the writing done that slows me down.
Totally jealous that you got to meet Dorie! If I ever have a chance to get her to sign my books, she’ll know what a messy cook I am, LOL!

I am a TWD BWJ dropout as well…just wasn’t matching where I was at the moment but I did enjoy the recipes I did make and I did make more than I posted after I dropped out. I was a member of the first TWD Baking From My Home to Yours and learned a lot and had so much fun…looking forward to this one as well. Will be fun baking with you.
I made more recipes than I posted as well. I didn’t find out about TWD until you were on the last two recipes of Baking From My Home to Yours. I immediately bought the book and have enjoyed many things from it. Dori’s recipe’s are well written. Thanks for stopping by my blog.
How lucky was that, that Dorie was just down the road from you on your trip! Your cookies look wonderful. Next time, I’m thinking of omitting the milk in the icing and using all lemon juice.
